Overview
Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 2014
The 2014 Comtes de Champagne is pristine. In this tasting, it comes across as a mini-2008, similar in its linear personality, with just a touch more mid-palate creaminess. Readers will find a Comtes that plays in the realm of tension and energy. Citrus confit, white flowers, chalk, mint and chamomile are all finely sketched. Light tropical overtones grace the finish. What an absolute delight. The 2014 can be enjoyed now or cellared. Dosage is 9 grams per liter."
97 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com (Tasted April 2025).
Drink 2026-2044
Taittinger Comtes de Champagne is a prestige cuvée Blanc de Blancs made entirely from Chardonnay grapes sourced from the best Grand Cru vineyards in the prestigious Côte des Blancs region. It is only produced when the harvest is of exceptional quality worthy of a vintage year. Winemaking methods involve strictly using just the first press juice and ageing 5% of the wines for four months in new oak barrels - a third of which are renewed every year - to enhance the intrinsic qualities and complexities of the final blend. Presented in 18th century antique style bottles, this hand-crafted champagne is aged eighteen metres underground in the UNESCO status Saint-Nicaise cellars in Reims for a minimum of eight years before being released.
Weather:
2014 was characterised by mild temperatures and frequent rainfall and a few weeks of high temperatures, a very solid vintage with good ripeness and acidity. The year 2014 revealed itself late. In fact it was one of the last vintages to be harvested in October. Spring was slow to arrive after an especially long and cold winter. By mid-April, an exceptional summer began: warm, dry and bright, with over 800 hours of sunshine a record for Champagne! The grapes developed with remarkable strength and vitality. A few light showers in early September helped the bunches gain in volume and ripeness.
Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Grands Crus - Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger
Grape Varieties: 100% Chardonnay
Ageing: 8 years on lees
Disgorged: April 2024
Dosage: 9 g/l
Background Information:
The Taittinger Comtes de Champagne vintages are the quintessential House style. Some vintages, be they Blanc de Blancs or sometimes - in exceptional years - Rosé, become classics and join the legendary status of the top wines from the Champagne region. With this champagne, the mission has been truly accomplished, as it not only excites the palate with a range of exquisite sensations, but also touches the very depths of the soul and leaves its mark on a person.
The Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs is the finest example of the Taittinger House style and is always a vintage cuvée. It is made with 100% white grapes from the 5 villages with a Grands Crus classification for the Chardonnay grape (Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Oger, Mesnil-sur-Oger).
This cuvée is created using juice from the first press only. A small percentage (5 %) of the blend is aged in fresh oak barrels to create the very delicate balance of toasted notes in the final wine. Taittinger knows it must be patient with these great Chardonnays, which are the crowning glory of its terroir; the Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs remains for up to 10 years in the chalk quarries beneath Saint-Nicaise, before emerging to ignite and delight the palates of wine-lovers.
