Overview
Palmer & Co Vintage Collection 1996
Rare and extraordinary Vintages
Palmer & Co is one of the very rare champagne houses to have an impressive collection of rare vintages, such as 1989, 1987, 1985, 1979 and 1976. These precious bottles are stored "sur pointe" in the chalky cradle of our cellars.
The very long maturing period of these exceptional wines confers on them a rare degree of complexity and richness while at the same time preserving their remarkable freshness.
Vintage Collection wines are all 100% Grand and Premier Grand Crus vineyards in the Montagne de Reims.
Tasting Notes:
"Palmer's 1996 Brut Collection Vintage is very typical of this vintage in Champagne, unfurling in the glass with aromas of iodine, smoky citrus oil, mandarin and honeycomb.
On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, bright and incisive, with a broad, delicately textural attack, good intensity at the core and a bright spine of tangy acidity that contributes considerable back-end drive and effectively plays off the wine's dosage. Drinking well today, this is the finest wine I have ever tasted from Palmer."
William Kelley, Robertparker.com
The Year:
Weather conditions in 1996 started with a dry and mild winter, followed by some frost in February. The budding took place mid-April when temperatures rose strongly. This momentum is stopped in May by cold temperatures but no rain. A warm beginnning of June with a lot of sunlight helped the flowering which happened between the 16th and the 19th. After a lukewarm summer, the first grapes were harvested on September 14th and the last ones on October 1st. The sugar contents rose very quickly while the fruit retained an exceptionally high level of acidity. With well chosen harvest dates, the balance between strength and acidity was at a very high level. All the conditions were there to elaborate an exceptional vintage.
