Overview
Dom
Pérignon
Vintage 2004
Release Date - 14 May 2013.
Tasting Notes:
Considered as a Contemporary Classic, Dom Perignon Vintage 2004 shows a propensity for growth and expansion, as well as solar qualities with dark and complex underpinnings.
On the nose, aromas of almond and powdered cocoa develop gradually into white fruit with hints of dried flowers. Classic toasted notes give a rounded finish and denote a fully realized maturity.
On the palate, the wine instantly traces an astoundingly fine line between density and weightlessness. Its precision is extreme, tactile, dark and chiselled.
The full taste lingers with the utmost elegance on a sappy spicy note.
2004 Vintage:
Dom Perignon sources in the seamless perfect assemblage of selected Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Playing with contrasts and complementary part, Dom Perignon creates a well-balanced tension of tradition and modernity to interpret the core of its universe. This new Vintage 2004 unveils an elegant and restrained contemporary classicism.
"The weather was nearly perfect in 2004," says Richard Geoffroy, Dom Perignon's Chef de Cave, and the year rolled by effortlessly. The 2004 vintage clearly demonstrates that ease, but its true personality was only revealed thanks to the dry heat during the last few weeks. The growing and fruit ripening periods went by smoothly, with no difficulties, a phenomenon that we have rarely, if ever, seen before.
The 2004 vintage leaves its mark on the history of Dom Perignon for its ease and harmony. In contrast with the year before, vine growth was regular and progressed without incident, while the bunches were of a significant number and size. The weather remained moderate for some time with the month of August particularly cool the vintage was defined by the dry heat of the final weeks before the harvest. The harvest began on September 24th with the grapes displaying excellent ripeness and health.
It is the Chef de Cave's prerogative to decide when a vintage should see the light of day. After no fewer than eight years of aging on the lees, Dom Perignon Vintage 2004 now reveals its first radiant expression, with the promise of more plenitudes to come. Right from the start, Vintage 2004 opens up in an astonishing way, with great ease, extroverted and symbiotic. Gradually, with rare elegance, it glides between density and buoyancy in a seamless crescendo leading into the chiseled complexity of a singular universe.
Review:
Dom Perignon Vintage 2004 is both all-embracing and intriguing. It never fully reveals itself. It reveals and hides at the same time.
Richard Geoffroy, Chef de Cave since 1990
Background Information:
When Father Pierre Perignon took over as cellar master at the Benedictine Abbey of Hautvillers in 1668, his avowed goal was "to make the best wine in the world". For a young monk just 30 years old, it took a visionary spirit and exceptional audacity to pursue such lofty ambitions. An exact contemporary of Louis XIV, Dom Perignon transformed the history of wine, just as the Sun King revolutionized the very notion of "art de vivre". Wine was the medium for their meeting, as the excellence of "Father Perignon's wine" earned it a place at the king's table.
More than three centuries later, the House of Dom Perignon perpetuates the visionary approach of its founder, widely considered the spiritual father of Champagne. Released only as a vintage, Dom Perignon is cellar aged for at least seven years prior to release. This time is critical for harmonising the flavours and ensuring that the wine's balance remains elegant, sensual and ethereal. Dom Perignon can also be enjoyed many years later with rare OEnotheque vintages, released by the Chef de Cave at times when the intensity and complexity of the wine has reached optimum levels. Each new vintage is a unique creative act, reinventing the extraordinary style of a wine that only the Chef de Cave may declare a "vintage year".
"The grapes are never the same from one year to the next. If a harvest does not meet Dom Perignon's unyielding standards, there will be no vintage champagne that year. This isn't a value judgment - it's an aesthetic vision" says Dom Perignon Chef de Cave Richard Geoffroy.
The unique personality of Dom Perignon is born of this creative commitment. It is this tension between the distinctive qualities of a year and the timeless spirit that defines Dom Perignon, an unparalleled sensation that imparts weightlessness, airy richness and suppleness from first impression to the long-lasting finish.
Dom Perignon: the best wine in the world.
