Dom Perignon Rose 2004 - by Michael Riedel
New Release. Price £295.00.
The 2016 Creator's Edition has been formed in partnership with Michael Riedel.
Riedel is known for his affinity for transformation. Much like the slow transformation of a wine over the years, the German artist permutes and transfers existing materials. For Dom Pérignon he has taken the D and P in the Maison’s name and created a poetic optical metaphor for the passage of time. He did this by creating a complex layering of the two letters across both the box and the bottle labels. This is a singular mix of super-positioning, deconstruction and aggregation of the letters D and P.
The story of Dom Pérignon is a story of constant reinvention and each Vintage is a new beginning.
Always a vintage Champagne made from grapes grown in the same year. The wine truly expresses itself when the Chef de Cave brings it to the surface, when it leaves the darkness of the cellars to express living power.
Dom Pérignon Rosé Vintage 2004 has been re-discovered and brought into the light and is now delivering this expression full of life and singularity.
The nose sings out loud and clear, beginning with fresh, intense red fruit: redcurrants and wild strawberries, complemented by warm notes of ripe hay, blood orange and cocoa.
The attack is smooth and embracing, but it is the impression of precision that dominates in the end. The wine's chiselled integrity, intense and penetrating, is prolonged with the unexpected hint of green citrus that marks the vintage.
The 2004 Harvest:
The full bodied ease of the 2004 vintage will leave its mark on the history of Dom Pérignon. In stark contrast to the previous year, the vines experienced steady, problem-free vegetative growth, with abundant, sizable grape clusters.
There were no weather extremes during most of the season - even the month of August was rather cool. It was the dry heat of the final weeks that made the vintage what it is. The harvest of the mature, healthy crop began on September 24th.
Dom Perignon Rose is considered the jewel of Dom Perignon: luminous, complex and bold, it is the most daring and intriguing expression of the Dom Perignon style.
This jewel holds the secret to eternal life: after being aged for 10 years before being released, it still has the same light-heartedness, impetuosity and vivacity, the vitality of the fruit is intact.
Dom Perignon Rose is made from the purest fruit: the rarest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Only a handful of the finest grands crus vineyards have the soil and exposure that enable them to attain their fullest expression, which is why Dom Pérignon Rosé is always produced in very limited numbers.
These red wines provide extra vinosity, which must be balanced out in the final assemblage to conform to the Dom Perignon style, making it a real challenge for the Chef de Cave.
“Dom Perignon Rose is an extrovert wine that gives the Pinot Noir grape its due, almost to the point of contradiction, since the heart of the Dom Pérignon spirit is to achieve a perfect balance between white and black grapes. That is what makes it so tantalizing,” says Richard Geoffroy, Dom Pérignon Chef de Cave.
