Dom Perignon 2006 - by Michael Riedel

New Release. Price £145.00.

The 2016 Creator's Edition has been formed in partnership with Michael Riedel.

Riedel is known for his affinity for transformation. Much like the slow transformation of a wine over the years, the German artist permutes and transfers existing materials. For Dom Pérignon he has taken the D and P in the Maison’s name and created a poetic optical metaphor for the passage of time. He did this by creating a complex layering of the two letters across both the box and the bottle labels. This is a singular mix of super-positioning, deconstruction and aggregation of the letters D and P.

Vintage 2006:
The story of Dom Pérignon is a story of constant reinvention and each Vintage is a new beginning.

Always a vintage Champagne made from grapes grown in the same year. The wine truly expresses itself when the Chef de Cave brings it to the surface, when it leaves the darkness of the cellars to express living power.
Dom Pérignon Vintage 2006 has arrived in the light and is now delivering this expression full of life and singularity.

The release of Dom Pérignon 2006 marks the 1st time in Dom Pérignon’s history that five consecutive vintages have been made – 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Released - October 2015.

Tasting Notes:

The immediate impression is of the mildness of the pure, airy, bright bouquet.

A floral, fruity pastel tone then unfolds and quickly darkens into candied fruit, ripe hay and toasted notes, along with hints of licorice.

“The wine’s opulence – contained and succulent, round at heart – reveals itself in the mouth”.

The envelope slides and stretches, and the wine beceoms more complex and edgy, silkier than it is creamy.

“The whole eventually melts into an exquisite bitterness tinged with the briny taste of the sea”.

The 2006 Vintage:

The story of Dom Pérignon is a story of constant reinvention and each Vintage is a new beginning.

The weather in 2006 was mixed, but warm and dry overall. While July was scorching hot, August was unusually cool and wet. The almost summery weather in September made the vintage possible by drying out the few patches of botrytis and maturing the grapes far more than usual. The harvest began on September 11 and lasted nearly three weeks.

Background Information:

When Father Pierre Perignon took over as cellar master at the Benedictine Abbey of Hautvillers in 1668, his avowed goal was "to make the best wine in the world". For a young monk just 30 years old, it took a visionary spirit and exceptional audacity to pursue such lofty ambitions. An exact contemporary of Louis XIV, Dom Perignon transformed the history of wine, just as the Sun King revolutionized the very notion of "art de vivre". Wine was the medium for their meeting, as the excellence of "Father Perignon's wine" earned it a place at the king's table.

More than three centuries later, the House of Dom Perignon perpetuates the visionary approach of its founder, widely considered the spiritual father of Champagne. Released only as a vintage, Dom Perignon is cellar aged for at least seven years prior to release. This time is critical for harmonising the flavours and ensuring that the wine’s balance remains elegant, sensual and ethereal. Dom Perignon can also be enjoyed many years later with rare OEnotheque vintages, released by the Chef de Cave at times when the intensity and complexity of the wine has reached optimum levels. Each new vintage is a unique creative act, reinventing the extraordinary style of a wine that only the Chef de Cave may declare a "vintage year".

"The grapes are never the same from one year to the next. If a harvest does not meet Dom Perignon's unyielding standards, there will be no vintage champagne that year. This isn't a value judgment - it's an aesthetic vision" says Dom Perignon Chef de Cave Richard Geoffroy.

The unique personality of Dom Perignon is born of this creative commitment. It is this tension between the distinctive qualities of a year and the timeless spirit that defines Dom Perignon, an unparalleled sensation that imparts weightlessness, airy richness and suppleness from first impression to the long-lasting finish.

Dom Perignon: the best wine in the world.
